Teak floors will not retain it’s beauty forever. As years go by, they gradually begin to lose it’s natural luster. Sometimes, you can make your teak floors shine again by waxing them, but if you want your teak floors to recover it’s natural beauty you should try refinishing them.

The refinishing process is somewhat tough, s it’s recommend to hire a professional to do it. Teak wood is particularly hard, that’s why we recommend you to get experienced help, otherwise you may end leaving the work unfinished.

Having your teak floors refinished has a great impact on how your house looks. It may even make house look brand new, but sometimes you may achieve the same results without refinishing. If you only want to wipe out some minor scratches and improve the floor’s luster, probably you only need to apply a coat of finish.

You should take into consideration that refinishing is not always effective. Each time you refinish your floor, it becomes thinner and thinner, until it gets to a point where it needs to be changed, or at least some portions of it. Under certain circumstances, your hardwood teak floors may rot, soften or become somewhat spongy. In this cases you need to replace the damaged area because refinishing is no longer an option.

If you are already decided to refinish your teak floor, you should start by determining if your floor still has enough wood to refinish. This can be achieved by examining the edges. This should give you a clear idea of whether or not the floor may resist another refinish.

The second step towards refinishing your hardwood teak floors is to fill any gaps that may be on it. Once all the gaps are filled, you may continue sanding the floor. It is recommended to use a drum sander to speed up the process, and leave the floor more even, however you shouldn’t stay too much on the same spot or it will be permanently damaged.

Once the sanding process is over, you should clean all the area before applying some teak oil or your preferred finish to the teak floor. Just follow the instructions of the product you choose and your hardwood teak floor will shining just like new.
